TSA Precheck Screening Benefits Expanding To Additional Airports

By Shane Nolan

April 3, 2012 - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced new details regarding the expansion of the TSA PreCheck initiative. Since its launch in October 2011, more than 640,000 passengers have been screened through TSA PreCheck.

By changing procedures for those travelers the agency knows more about, through information they voluntarily provide and combining that information with TSA?s multi-layered system of aviation security, TSA can better focus limited resources on higher-risk and unknown passengers.

TSA PreCheck is currently operational at 11 airports and is expanding to additional airports and airlines, as well as additional TSA PreCheck lanes at existing locations. Alaska Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways will begin offering TSA PreCheck screening benefits at select locations in the coming months. TSA anticipates TSA PreCheck will be operational at many of the nation?s largest airports by the end of 2012.

Below are the airports and airlines beginning operations through June 2012:

New TSA PreCheck Locations:
Boston Logan International Airport                      Delta Air Lines
LaGuardia Airport                                             Delta Air Lines
Newark Liberty International Airport                     United Airlines
Orlando International Airport                               Delta Air Lines
Portland International Airport                              Alaska Airlines
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport                   Alaska Airlines

TSA PreCheck Locations Expanding with Additional Airlines:
Chicago?s O?Hare International Airport                    United Airlines
Los Angeles International Airport                          Delta Air Lines
LaGuardia Airport                                               American Airlines
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport            US Airways

Current TSA PreCheck Locations:
Chicago?s O?Hare International Airport                    American Airlines
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport                   American Airlines
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport             Delta Air Lines
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport       Delta Air Lines
John F. Kennedy International Airport                    American Airlines
Los Angeles International Airport                          American Airlines
Las Vegas? McCarran International Airport              American Airlines
Miami International Airport Delta and                     American airlines
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport               Delta Air Lines
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport            Delta Air Lines
Salt Lake City International Airport                       Delta Air Lines

If TSA determines a passenger is eligible for expedited screening through TSA PreCheck, that information is embedded in the barcode of the passenger?s boarding pass. TSA will read the barcode at the designated TSA PreCheck checkpoint and the passenger may be referred to a lane where they will undergo expedited screening, which could include being able to leave their shoes, light outerwear and belt on, allowing them to keep their laptop in its case and their 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on.

As part of the effort to implement additional risk-based security procedures, TSA is in the process of testing several other screening concepts, including a program designed to positively identify airline pilots, the use of expanded behavior detection techniques, modified screening procedures for travelers 75 and older, and providing TSA PreCheck screening benefits to U.S Military active duty members traveling through Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

As always, TSA will continue to incorporate random and unpredictable security measures throughout the security process. At no point are travelers guaranteed expedited screening. TSA?s multi-layered approach to security also includes behavior detection officers, explosives-detection systems, canine teams and Federal Air Marshals, among other measures both seen and unseen.
