Nature of Work. The Ferry Pilot flies new aircraft from the manufacturing plant to dealers' showrooms and to private customers' home airports. After delivering new aircraft to customers and dealers, the pilot returns to her or his home base on a commercial airliner or by another form of transportation. The pilot may be away from home overnight, depending on the distance required by the ferry flight. Ferry flights may require flying to foreign countries. 

Operates out of cities having light aircraft manufacturing plants, most of which are concentrated in Kansas, Oklahoma, Florida and Pennsylvania. The production of general aviation aircraft has decreased from 17,000 in 1978 to approximately 3,000 in 1983. There recent reductions in production have significantly lessened the need for ferry pilots to deliver new aircraft. The active used aircraft market has increased demand somewhat, but it is still quite low.
