August 7, 2009, During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937, American aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day. Coming in October is a movie titled “Amelia”. The movie “Amelia” will chronicle the life of Amelia Earhart, was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. |

Earhart set many other records, wrote best selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. Amelia Earhart will be played by Best Actress Oscar winner Hilary Swank and star Richard Gere. Hilary Swank is a two time Academy Award-winning actress who played in the movie Boys Don't Cry (1999) as Brandon Teena, a transgender man and in Million Dollar Baby (2004) as Maggie Fitzgerald as a struggling waitress-turned-boxer. Swank got her first Hollywood film role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) and then a major role in The Next Karate Kid (1994), where she played Julie Pierce, the first female protege of the sensei Mr. Miyagi. The movie "Amelia," does not attempt to offer a solution to the mystery of the disappearance of "Amelia Earhart." In theaters October 23, 2009. |
