Hurricane Frederic Struck Port City
SEPTEMBER Hurricane Relief. Mobile, Alabama, was devastated by Hurricane Frederic which struck the port city on 12 September with winds in excess of 130 MPH. The hurricane triggered a number of violent tournedos adding to the destruction which has been estimated at $1.25 billion. At day- break, following passage of the storm, CAP members from through- out the southern half of the state arrived to provide emergency assistance to storm victims and to help in the massive cleanup job. Equipped with portable generators, chain saws, communications gear, and other tools, the CAP force joined with other civil relief agencies and hundreds of volunteers and worked for the next four days in clearing debris, removing fallen trees to make streets passable, and in distributing emergency supplies. |
